NOTE: It is essential that metallic foil paper be used when folding this model. If you use foil paper, the tail of the finished Phoenix will curve gracefully, and light reflected from the metallic foil surfaces will create a glowing fire effect on the exposed areas of the white paper. In contrast, if you use regular origami paper, the finished Phoenix will be bulky and dull in appearance.

[1] Start with the white side of the paper facing up. Fold in half horizontally.

[2] Valley fold the top layer of paper upwards as shown.
